It is important to talk about “spitzenkandidaten” and transnational lists. What we do not realize in this conversation, that it is one among european and political experts. Therefore it excludes the people it was supposed to include: the people of Europe. We will not reach non-voters and people who vote out of the democratic spectrum by these measures. The people who will have influence on transnational lists and “spitzenkandidaten” are the same which are failing it at the moment. What we do need for the upcoming election is new way of communicating. It needs to be less about finding new ways to vote but to make Europe personally relevant. One way could be to find several unifying European elements, to make them personal and communicating them well to the general public. The election needs less politicians but more communicators that can tell the narrative of Europe.
